In 1274 the Earl of Norfolk had a common gallows in Colby, free-warren, view of frankpledge, and of assize bread and ale, and infangthef, here and in Hanworth; and in 1285 all these liberties were allowed to Roger Bigod Earl of Norfolk, as a member of his manor of Hanworth, to which his half and manor of Colby was then joined, and it continued within the Howards till Sir John Howard, Knt. I take this to be the manor referred to as afterwards Gorge’s of which John Bishop of Norwich died seized in 1498, and in 1616 was settled by Sir Thomas Coventry, Knt. The Colbys’ manor here, known as Oldstead-corridor, descended in that family from Robert de Colebi, who inherited it by launch of Warine and Simon his brothers, to Hugh de Colebi and Margaret his wife, daughter of William Frank of Felmingham, and from them to their son, Henry de Coleby, who had a charter for freewarren, as at p. 1284, William Russell. John de Burgh, senior. 1349, Thomas de Burgh, he went to Marlesford. In 1548 Thomas Shakerley had it, after which Alan Hord, at whose loss of life, in 1554, Thomas Hord, Esq. Roger Flint. In 1702 John Harbord, Esq. Harbord Harbord, Esq. and now Sir William Morden Harbord of Gunthorp in Norfolk.
William Botery, citizen of London, after the dying of Margaret, spouse of Edmund Delapole, it having been settled formerly on Sir Robert Drewry, Knt. Meredith, when he was ejected, obtained possession of Colby, and died in 1569, after which Sir William Platers of Saterly, Knt. Viscount Purbeck, and Frances his wife, daughter of the said Sir Edward Cooke, by Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Earl of Excester, and widow of Sir William Newport, alias Hutton, Knt. 1315, and in 1330 King Edward III. Felmingham, and afterwards bought it to Sir Edward Cook, who in 1616 settled it on Sir Robert Cooke, his son and heir, and heir trustees settled it, (in consideration of a marriage,) with many different manors, on Sir John Villiers, Knt. Thomas Wodehouse, whose cousin and heir, Sir Henry Woodehouse of Waxham, had it in 1573, and mortgaged it to Thomas Crofts, Esq.
